KATHMANDU, May 1: ‘Skill Far 2024’, organized by Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), has kicked off  from today. On the occasion of International Workers' Day, the KMC aims to provide free vocational training to 2,081individuals.

Sunita Dangol, the deputy mayor of the metropolis, mentioned that there is a big gap between the demand and supply of skilled manpower, adding that they are going to organize skill-based training to ensure that skilled manpower aligns with employers’ demand and enables youths to secure jobs that match their qualifications.

"The goal of the training is to show that there are many opportunities for employment domestically, to transition individuals from the informal sector to the formal economy by equipping them with necessary skills," Deputy Mayor Dangol said. "All the participants in the training will be given 'employment', 'self-employment' or 'On the Job training (OJT),” she added.

Deepak Adhikari, co-spokesperson for the KMC, said that those who want to undergo training but missed to fill the online form can come and fill the form at the training venue.

He said that the main goal of the training is to connect 'education with skills', 'skills with labor' and 'labor with production' to make those who do not have skills have skills, to create employment and self-employment for those who have skills, to increase the professional level of those who are employed but without skills and to increase their income.

In one month, 2,081 people will be provided free training related to high-demand professions.

The training is being organized in collaboration with Higher Institutions and Secondary Schools' Association Nepal (HISSAN), Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI), Nepal Training and Employment Trade Federation of Nepal (FP-TEN), Glocal, Sipradi Trading and CCTV Station and Smart Home. “In this way, employers (government, non-government, private, industry and commercial sector, donor agencies), educational sector (schools, universities and training provider associations), and the social sector are all working together for one cause,” says Engineer Shailendra Jha, a member of the Urban Planning Commission.

Under the Metropolitan Pride Project, there are more than 34 vocational training projects in the 'Employment and Income Growth, Kathmandu's Prosperity' program. As many as 4000 people are being trained in 'Cyber Security'. It is expected to create awareness about professional skills, create an environment for conducting training at the community level, and develop the capacity of youth for employment and entrepreneurship.

A total of 10 areas have been identified for training at the Skill Fair. Within these areas, there will be 29 types of vocational training. There are plans to include more areas and occupations based on the need.

On the final day of the training, a job fair will be organized where employers will set up stalls. Trained individuals will have the opportunity to connect with prospective employers, showcasing their skills and qualifications.

The 10 areas identified for training are:

Automobiles: Auto Electric, Auto Air Condition, Motorcycle and Scooter Repair (EV), Electrical Car Repair (EV).

Construction Sector: Carpentry, Tile and Marble Fitting, Electrician, and Plumbing.

Hospitality and Management: Barista, Food and Cook, Waiter, Bartending, and Waiter/Waitress.

Information Technology: Digital Marketing, Graphics Designing, Computer Hardware and Networking, CCTV Camera Installation.

Mechanical: Welding, Refrigerator, and AC Technicians

Art and Culture: Art and Culture.

Garments: Tailoring and Fashion Designing.

Beautician: Nail Art, Makeup Art, Eyelash Art, Hair Cutting and Styling, Salon Training.

Designing: Sign Making.

Priesthood: Priestly and Astrology Training.
