KATHMANDU, April 15: Nepal is going to host an international dialogue on mountains and climate change in May.

The event, titled 'International Dialogue on Mountain, People, and Climate,' is scheduled to take place in Kathmandu on May 22 and 23. It will bring together representatives from mountainous countries, experts, and partner organizations to discuss pressing issues related to mountain areas.

According to the Ministry of Forests and Environment, the objectives of the dialogue include fostering consensus among mountain nations on mountain-related issues and enhancing the effectiveness of national and international initiatives in addressing these challenges.

Additionally, the conference aims to extend invitations to low-lying coastal countries such as Bangladesh, which are suffering from the effects of climate change. 

Since 2009, Nepal has been raising its voice in international forums including the World Conference on Climate Change about the negative impact of climate change on the ecological system, people's life and biodiversity of the mountainous region.

The United Nations Climate Conference (COP-28) held in Dubai last year took a decision to address the effects of climate change on mountain areas for the first time.

The COP-28 instructed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to hold expert discussions on mountains and climate change at the 60th meeting of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

According to the instruction, Nepal will convene an international dialogue on this matter ahead of the meeting scheduled for June in Bonn, Germany.
