46,000 civil servants moved to polling centers

KATHMANDU, May 9: Over 46,000 civil servants have been deployed to 283 local units of three provinces for the first phase of local elections scheduled for Sunday.

KATHMANDU, May 9: The Election Commission (EC) is to depute voter education volunteers in polling stations itself from May 11 to 13 to conduct voter education programs.

KATHMANDU, May 9: The locals at north eastern areas of Kathmandu Metropolitan City have complained that they are unaware about how to vote in the May 14 local-level elections.

KATHMANDU, May 9: Only eight percent of the total number of candidates fielded for the positions of chiefs of local units -municipalities or rural municipalities - are female even though the election law has made it mandatory to field opposite genders for the chief and the deputy chief of a given unit.

UML orders leaders, rank and file to campaign for polls

KATHMANDU, May 9: CPN-UML has directed the party leaders and rank and file to compulsorily take part in the election campaign across the country.  While the party's office bearers are scheduled to campaign in major constituencies, the second rung leaders including those representing the party in parliament have been asked to campaign for party's candidates in their respective districts.

KATHMANDU, May 9: Three major political parties - Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) - have agreed in principle to start counting votes shortly after the conclusion of the first phase elections on May 14.  A formal decision regarding this will be taken after consulting with the Election Commission and other political parties, according to a source.

NEPALGUNJ, May 9: Dozens of leaders from Nepali Congress (NC) were willing to contest for the mayoral post of Chaurjahari Municipality of Rukum district. But the party gave ticket to Balbir Gosain, a lesser-known retired bank official. Gosain, who retired as officer of Nepal Bank Limited just a month before getting the election ticket, sidelined local Congress leaders of the district.
