KATHMANDU, Dec 10: Almost three months after the crime, police arrested three men on charge of stealing Rs 3.5 from Thamel-based Jyu De Siang Hotel. Two of the arrested are siblings and the third one is their cousin.

They were found to have invested the stolen amount in a general store in Bhaktapur and to purchase land.

Metropolitan Police Range, Bhaktapur, Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku and Metropolitan Police Circle, Lainchaur had arrested the three brothers 88 days after the theft that took place on September 14.

The three have been identified as Tika Thapa Magar, 27, Chandra Thapa Magar, 23 and Tirtha  Thapa Magar, 17, originally from Lakhanpur VDC-6 of Ramechhap district and currently staying at Madhyapur Thimi-3 in Bhaktapur.

According to DSP Somendra Singh Rathore, chief of Metropolitan Police Circle, Lainchaur, the three brothers were staffers at Jyu De Siang Hotel operated by Chinese national Yuebing Thang, who operates three hotels and a garment factory in Kathmandu. Of the three, one was a waiter, another a helper and the youngest one dishwasher in the hotel.

As per the preliminary investigation of the police, the three planned to steal cash from the hotelier after knowing that he had Rs 3.5 million in the cash counter. As per the plan, the three stole the amount and were never seen again, helping the police narrow down the investigation.

Based on a complaint filed by hotelier Yuebing, police launched an investigation and were able to arrest the three from a house owned by Shivram Dhaubanjar on Wednesday, where they were living in a rented flat after the theft. Earlier, the three had been hiding in the Tarai district for some weeks after the theft.

After returning back in the Valley, the three jointly purchased a piece of land in Bhaktapur for Rs 1.8 million and bought a 220 CC Pulsar motorcycle (Ba 80 Pa 7341) and purchased a general store in operation upon payment of Rs 500,000 in advance. Police also seized Rs 465, 000 from their possession.

Metropolitan Police Range, Bhaktapur has sent the arrested to Metropolitan Police Circle, Sohrakhutte for further action. District Court Kathmandu has remanded them to seven days in custody. Police said that the three have confessed to the crime.
