Tiwari ends 18-day hunger strike

RAJBIRAJ, Dec 10: Chairman of the Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Gajendrabadi), Bikas Kumar Tiwari, who was on a hunger strike for the last 18 days with various demands, ended his fast-unto-death on Saturday.

Tiwari terminated his hunger strike after he reached a four-point agreement with the government in presence of Minister for Health Gagan Kumar Thapa. He drank a juice offered by Nil Kumari Mahato, a girl receiving treatment at the hospital, to end the hunger strike.

Tiwari had started the hunger strike on November 23 demanding reforms in the health sector and better management of Gajendra Narayan Singh Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital in Rajbiraj.

As per the agreement, both the sides concluded that the services as the hospital are irregular, unaccountable and of substandard quality. The agreement paper reads that works for construction of maternity center will start within 15 days and posting of specialized doctors in all the departments of the hospitall will be made within one month.

Likewise, an agreement has been reached to purchase all the necessary equipments for dialysis, surgery, digital x-ray among others immediately and to form a high-level committee to investigate alleged corruption at the hospital among others.
