Most of us are unaware of the most basic and effective techniques to defend ourselves if we find ourselves caught in a situation that demands it. Reya Shreya Rai talked to self-defense expert Rajina Shrestha to learn some very important defense techniques suitable for all, keeping in mind the average Nepali female physique. Memorize these techniques to defend yourself by inflicting some serious pain on the deserving. (The Self Defense is the third part of Hollaback! Kathmandu’s session on dealing with street harassment with a purpose to equip girls with basic skills required to defend themselves against street harassment and also build confidence in girls so that they can handle a tough situation when faced with one.)

When someone grabs your neck from the back
Look for the direction to escape. It can be an open door or a road.
Lock the person’s hand into your shoulder by tilting your head to trap their hand in any side and then lift your arm into a 90-degree angle to entrap it well.
Take a 360-degree turn to get out of the grip and run towards the exit.
Note: The harder you press down on the assaulter’s hand; the more pressure is applied. Make sure that your grip is extra vice-like on the offender’s arm, which makes the escape easier.

When someone grabs your neck from the front

Make your hand into a C shape and use your force in the cross fashion.
Hit the person at the end of their wrist.
Tilt your head out as you do.
When someone puts his hand on your shoulder
Grab the hand.
Slowly take a 180-degree turn.
Keep their palm straight and apply pressure to bend their fingers.
Note: The harder you bend, the more painful it will be.

When someone grabs your hand

Look for an opening on the grip.
Apply force on the point of the opening, as it’s the weakest area.
If the opening is sideways, twist the arm to get out.

Upper cut
Keep your thumb out
Punch from down to up aiming for the chin
Note: When you swing your arm with more energy and distance, the impact is greater. So, thank god for laws of gravity and your awareness of it and impart the knowledge on your subject as well.

Groin kick
Put your hand on the person’s shoulder/collar bone depending on their height.
Place your left foot forward first and then pick your right one to kick the person on the groin (Switch if you’re a left- handed person).
Tilt your head sideways while doing so.Note: The head tilt is necessary to ensure that you don’t crash your own head with the assaulters and cause serious pain to yourself too.
