KATHMANDU, Dec 23: The Department of Railways (DoR) has forwarded the process for the feasibility study of the Kathmandu-Birgunj Electric Railway Line.

DoR said that it has started the process for the feasibility study as the rail network is significant as the transportation from Birgunj-Kathmandu through passenger and freight trains will be   cheaper, secured, less time consuming and environment-friendly. Birgunj is a major trading point for Nepal as over 70 percent of its import and export are done through the border entry point.

Senior Divisional Engineer at DoR , Prakash Upadhyay said that it is mandatory to construct the Kathmandu-Birgunj Railway Line to connect Birgunj and Rasuwagadhi with the rail networks.

“The department is taking forward the construction of north-south rail networks at the time when the work for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Mechi-Mahakali Railway has already started,” he said.

The department has already called for a global tender for the feasibility study of the Kathmandu-Birgunj Railway Line on November 29 with a 31-day deadline.

The selected consultant should conduct feasibility studies, prepare preliminary cost estimate and recommend best technical, financial and economical routes from the six months of the selection.

Likewise, the selected consultant should present three routes for the railway line and recommend the best one.
