KATHMANDU, Jan 21: Eighteen metric tons of solid waste was extracted in the weekly cleaning drive that took place in the major rivers inside Kathmandu valley.

Under the 193rd week of the Bagmati cleaning mega campaign, six metric tons of solid waste was extracted and managed from Sinamangal to Baneswar campus area today, according to campaigner Umesh Bohara.

Members of the Empowered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee, Kathmandu metropolis, Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police and the general public took part in the cleaning event. Former government secretary Keshav Thapa led the cleanliness programme.

Meanwhile, proprietor of the Shiva Shanker Hotel in Jayabageswari, who was arrested for dumping waste into the Bagmati river was fined Rs. 15,000 and left with a warning to be fined Rs. 150,000 if he repeats the offense, Bohara said.

Likewise, the 152nd week of cleaning of the Rudramati river saw extraction of six metric tons of solid waste from the Bhangalpul-Jyotinagar to the Nilopul area of Budhanilakantha municipality, according to Vice-chair of Rudramati Concern Society Rohit Giri.

Also today, another six metric tons of solid waste was managed from the Mahadev stream of Tarkeswar municipality under the 125th week of cleaning of the Bishnumati river, said campaigner Bijendra Lama. RSS
