Sonam Lhosar observed with gusto (photo feature)

KATHMANDU, Jan 28: The Sonam Lhosar, the festival of the Tamang Community, is being celebrated with much gusto by organizing various programs across the country.

As per the Manjushree Calendar, Sonam Lhosar is divided into 12 categories – Monkey, Bird, Mouse, Tiger, Cat, Horse, Pig, Ox, Rabbit, Sheep, Snake, Dragon.  Lho means year or age and Sar means new or fresh. The word Lhosar means New Year or beginning of new era.

This festival falls on the first day of new moon of the Nepali month of Magh (Magh Sukla Pratipada).

The festival is celebrated accordingly.  With the today’s celebration, the New Year has entered the cycle of Bird era.

Various community-based organizations including Nepal Tamang Ghedung have organized various programs at Thundikhel in Kathmandu to mark the festival Sonam Lhosar.

Tamang youths were seen clad in their traditional attires around Sundhara area today.
