JUMLA, Feb 4: Locals of Karnali region have demanded increase in quantity of rice for birth and death functions. The government had last month announced to provide 20 kg of rice per family for such functions. Stating that the quantity would not be enough for the functions, they have demanded to fix it between 50 kg to two quintals.

“Here, the locals are not happy with the decision of the government. What is offered by the government would be of no value for such functions, they say,” said Local Development Officer Harinarayan Belbase.

He added that the additional quantity is fair keeping in view the remoteness of the areas.

The locals had been receiving rice for such functions from the government depot since decades.

However, that was not even 20 kg. According to local Nepali Congress leader Karma Budha, there is no point of protesting the government's decision when the policy has already been formulated. “But then, the government could add some quantity. Maybe, it could fix it at 50 kg,” he said.

Meanwhile, leader of CPN (Maoist  Center) Birkha Bahadur Shahi opined that the government should show sensitivity toward the grievances of the people. “The government should understand the situation of the people. Of course, the people deserve far more facilities than given now. The quantity of rice should be added,” he said.

Shahi added that the government's new policy is welcome only if it is ready to address the demand of the locals.  “They must make the distribution process equally transparent. Or else, people would not benefit no matter what facility is promised on papers,” he said.

Locals can get the said amount of rice from the nearest government depot within six months of the event.
