Shailendra Raj Giri is a known figure in the Nepali job market. He is the managing director of meroJob.com and has been in HR business for the last 15 years. He was appointed as the managing director of meroJob.com in 2002. meroJob.com is a leading career management site in Nepal.
In conversation with Republica’s Prasansha Rimal he talks about the challenges of working in HR business and situation of online business in Nepal.

How is the online business in Nepal?
meroJob.com is just a part of a business system. We follow the same principles and philosophy of business. The online business in Nepal is growing, but people here still need to understand many things. The importance should not only be given to the online part of the business but should be given to the business itself. Just because you have good features on a website doesn’t mean that the business will succeed. One has to have knowledge about marketing, investment, HR and many more.

Why search for a job online instead through other sources?
Online is the trend and has become a culture. Everyone looks for comfort, efficiency so that they can save time and be productive. Searching for jobs online saves time by letting anyone access the vacancy anytime and from anywhere. This lets an individual utilize their time and be productive.

Which sector has higher demand for human resource?
Various non-government sectors post vacancies in meroJob.com. I see the demand of competent manpower in every sector of Nepal. I feel that the IT companies of Nepal need more manpower; various INGOs and NGOs are also looking for employees, especially post earthquake. And demand for employees in banking and education sector is also high.

What are the challenges in this sector?
The challenge in this sector is that we have to be able to meet the needs of both the job seekers and the companies looking for employees. The problem lies in both parties. The job seekers are not prepared enough and the young generation thinks that they will just get the job with a degree and without any skill. And everyone wants to go abroad and aren’t decisive about what they want to achieve out of their job. This creates a lack of competent job seekers and companies feel that we are not being able to provide them with competent manpower. On the other side, although most organizations have HR department, it is not efficient and the organizations just think that paying well is enough for an employee. They fail to understand the need of the employee and provide other requirement which creates frustration within organization and people prefer to go abroad rather than work here in Nepal.

How is meroJob.com benefiting the young generation?
meroJob.com is benefiting the young generation of Nepal by breaking the trend of nepotism. If someone is talented, they no longer need to go talk to politicians or people in a high post for a job. They can now build their future on their own by simply applying for various jobs through their cell phone or computer.
