KATHMANDU, Feb 20: Madhes-based parties, which are demanding for constitution amendment, have announced protest programs as the government declared to hold local elections on May 14.

The leaders of the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) were on a meeting at Tarai Madhes Democratic Party's central office when the Cabinet was meeting to announce the date for local level election.

The Madhes-based parties announced protest programs against the government move issuing a press release right after the government declared the date for election.

"We have termed the government move unfortunate and announced protest programs against it. We'll hold a torch rally on Tuesday. We appeal for general strike for Wednesday in Madhes districts," said Manish Suman, the general secretary of the Sadbhavana Party.

"We will also launch a special campaign to expose the government's move for next 15 days," he added.

The Madhes-based parties, which voted to form the present government, were demanding with the government to complete the constitution amendment process prior to announcing poll date.
