KALIKOT, Feb 28: At least 12 students were injured in a clash between various student unions in Kalikot district on Monday.

A joint group of Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) and All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU) clashed with the cadres of the All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) and students affiliated to the Rastriya Prajatantra Party. NSU is affiliated with the Nepali Congress, ANNFSU with the CPN-UML, and the ANNISU-R is affiliated to the CPN (Maoist Center).

Four of the injured are in critical condition at various hospitals, police said.
ANNFSU’s Madan Singh sustained severe injuries after cadres of the ANNISU-R pelted stones at him. Likewise, Mandiraj Rokaya of ANNISU-R also sustained injuries after being mistakenly hit by stones pelted by his own comrades, police said.

The clashes ended only after police fired tear gases and dispersed the students. Similarly, Ratna Singh Saud, an ANNISU-R-affiliated student leader from Kotwada-based Nanda Devi Multiple Campus who was selected as election officer, was smeared with black soot on the face after returning to the district’s headquarters.

NSU and ANNFSU have been hitting the streets demanding postponement of the election scheduled for March 1.
