ILAM, Mar 1: As the date for the local election is approaching, representatives and cadres of various political parties have started visiting villages for the promotion and preparation of election.

The fever of election had gripped some ministers and political leaders even before the date for the local election was announced. Former prime minister Jhala Nath Khal and former chairman of the Constituent Assembly, Subash Chandra Nembang, were actively involved in the preparation and promotion of election since the last two months. They were busy meeting with the cadres and representatives in various districts to make the election successful. They have urged the locals for their participation in the election and to choose well-deserving candidates who are capable of shouldering their responsibility.

During both the elections of Constituent Assembly in 2008 and 2013, Nembang was elected from Ilam-1 while Khanal from Ilam-2. According to Bhakta KC, district vice chairman of UML, Khanal has influenced more than 100 members of other parties to join the UML. Similarly, Nembang instructed party cadres to engage in poll campaign during his recent visit to the election constituencies. 

Similarly, cadres of UML are planning to visit villages to campaign for elections from March 6.

According to Mahesh Basnet, Ilam district secretary of UML, a   district committee meeting has been scheduled for March 6, where the members will be discussing about the strategies and preparations for the election. “As the people had to wait almost for two decades to participate in the local election, they are very much excited about it. They are pressurizing us to make the poll a success,” Basnet said.  

Many people have been demanding for local representatives since a long time.

Meanwhile, cadres of Nepali congress have also reached the election constituencies for their campaign. According to Niroj Khadgi, district secretary of NC, party members have been making the locals aware of the election. He further informed that Keshav Thapa, who was elected from Ilam-3 during the election of the 2013 Constituent Assembly, will be making his visit after a few days. 

Likewise, CPN -Maoist has also begun its preparation for the election by directing its cadres to start promotion in the election constituencies. “The party has been organizing various programs with the objective of engaging people for the election,” said Dhiren Sharma Raman, district incharge of the party. He informed that they have set a meeting for March 3 and 4 in Sankhuwasabha. “The preparations will be more effective after the meeting,” he added.

Various other parties have also submitted their details to the election office for their participation in the local elections.    

District Election Office has been conducting trainings for teachers to make them aware about the importance of local election. Those teachers, in turn, will be sharing the information with the locals and students of their respective villages.
