KATHMANDU, March 10: Strong wind, lightning and thunderstorm affected electricity supply at least five times on Friday.

According to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), its system collapsed at 2:11 pm when lightning struck Khimti-Kathmandu Transmission line. Power supply was restored at 2:25 pm.

“Our whole system collapsed after lightning struck the transmission line, affecting all our powerhouses,” Kulman Ghising, the managing director of NEA, told Republica. “Therefore, it took some time to restore our supply system.”

Power supply in the Kathmandu Valley was interrupted at least three times in the evening. According to Ghising, such interruptions were due to minor faults because of strong winds. “There was some fault in the transmission line that connects Baneshwar and Bhaktapur. Likewise, there was another fault in the transmission line between Kulekhani and Syuchatar, added Ghising.

According to Ghising, such interruptions are normal in this season because of strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning. “In the past years, people did not notice such interruptions because of lengthy power cuts,” he added.
