NC might miss local elections in Dolpa; RPP could miss in 9 districts

KATHMANDU, March 19: Election Commission on Sunday said that some of the parties including the ruling Nepali Congress and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) may be deprived of contesting upcoming local elections in some districts.

The EC, which has begun printing ballot papers from Sunday, has not included them in some districts after the parties did not submit their details and express their willingness to contest the election at district level when they were urged to do so.

"Some parties did not inform their existence and interest to contest in the election when we asked them to do so. Now they have complained but we are in a difficult position for accommodating them in ballot papers," said Surya Prasad Sharma, the spokesperson at the EC.

When asked whether the election commission will reconsider in allowing them to contest the elections, spokesperson Sharma said 'EC may not reconsider it though the discussions are underway."

Sources at EC said that the NC has not informed its presence in Dolpa while the RPP has missed in 9 districts, including Jhapa and Morang.

Earlier, the EC had asked the parties to register in local election offices and inform them whether they are contesting the election. Based on the EC notice, 47 political parties are registered in Kathmandu while only 6 parties are registered in Manang.

The ballot papers were designed based on the details of the parties provided by the local election offices.
