KATHMANDU, March 24: Former chief election commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety has suggested to the Election Commission (EC) to count votes at the polling stations itself for speedy election results.

Stating that the previous practice of bringing ballot boxes to the district headquarters for counting the votes was risky and time-consuming process, CEC Uprety suggested the commission to count the votes on the spot and make public election results by accumulating votes. "The commission can announce poll results of all election constituencies within three hours of the conclusion of voting," said Uprety speaking at a function organized in Kathmandu.

So far, the EC has been counting votes after ballot boxes are transported to the respective district headquarters. There had been a controversy during the 2013 Constituent Assembly after the then UCPN (Maoist) [present day CPN (Maoist Center)] accused the local security officials of exchanging ballot boxes on the way to the district headquarters.
