Local authorities preparing security strategy for polls

DOTI, March 27: With less than two months to go before the May 14 local election, authorities in the Far-western region are preparing a security strategy to ensure that the polls are conducted in a safe environment without fear.

As directed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), local administrations will soon come up with security strategies and implement them, according to the Regional Administration Office in Dipayal. The strategies will be mainly focused on controlling the use of weapons during the election period. 

“Illegal arms and ammunitions will be strictly controlled throughout the election period. We have already issued a notice to this effect,” said Shishir Kumar Dhungana, regional administrative officer. The polls are scheduled for May 14.

According to Dhungana, security will be tightened in areas sharing border with India. “We will tighten the security and bring strong plans based on past experiences,” he added.

About 1,000 weapons have been registered in the nine districts of the far-western region. There are 14 modern arms in Doti, 12 in Accham, 242 in Kanchanpur, 479 in Kailali, 93 in Dadeldhura, 48 in Baitadi, 23 in Darchula, two in Bajhang and 53 in Bajura, according to the district administration offices.
