RAMECHAP, March 31: District Election Office, Ramechhap, has fixed altogether 90 polling stations for two municipalities and six rural municipalities of the district for the upcoming May 14 local level elections.

District Election Officer Lok Bahadur Thapa informed Republica that Manthali municipality has 19 polling stations each - the highest number of polling stations for any local unit in the district - while and Gokul Ganga rural municipality has only six polling stations, the lowest number of polling stations for any local unit. Similarly, Ramechhap municipality has 14 polling stations while Khandadevi and Doramba rural municipalities have 11 polling stations each. Umakunda and Likhu rural municipalities have 10 polling stations each and there are 9 polling stations in Sunapati rural municipality.

According to Thapa, polling stations are determined on the basis of population, so, this time some polling stations were added in the district. He further said that the names of some polling stations have been changed for the election.

Preparations for the local level elections are going on in full swing in Ramechhap. Political leaders and cadres have been conducting mass gatherings and promotional events almost every day. Locals have already chosen their nominees and have even started promoting them. Meanwhile, prospective candidates have also started persuading the locals as well as members of political parties for their candidacy.

Major political parties like the CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre) which have good support in the district started their publicity campaigns two months ago.

However, the Nepali Congress leaders and cadres entered the villages with their campaigns only from Wednesday. With the election inching closer, aspiring candidates have been competing with each other for candidacy.

Political parties are facing a tough time choosing candidates as the number of people vying for the same post is more than expected. Similarly, the district election office has been busy managing the logistics required for the election.
