BHAKTAPUR, April 24: The standing committee meeting of the main opposition CPN (UML) has stressed on holding local poll in a single phase, slated for May 14.

The meeting held at the private residence of the party chair K P Sharma Oli at Balkot in the district this morning, concluded that the latest activities of the government and Tarai centric parties were found targeted to postpone the election through plotting conspiracy, adding that there was no reason to postpone the election as the Election Commission was reiterating on single phase election and people too were expecting the same.

Following the meeting, party secretary and chief of the publicity department Yogesh Bhattarai said that holding poll in two phases and even after May 29 after the budget presentation were not acceptable to his party.

He reiterated that UML was in its previous stance of holding local poll on May 14, adding that the election code of conduct will be violated while bringing the budget in between the elections. He added that his party was ready to hold discussions on holding poll in two phases if time was fixed before budget.

Leader Bhattarai claimed that the lately prepared constitution amendment bill was more regressive and against the welfare of the state in comparison to the previous one, therefore, UML will make it failure.

He added that his party would not let such a proposal to be presented in the parliament.

The new proposal has the provision of cutting off the rights of local level, arbitrarily changing the border of province, scrapping the Article 274 of the constitution among others, Bhattarai charged. RSS
