KATHMANDU, May 6: Min Bahadur Sherchan, the oldest mountaineer of Nepal, has died at the Everest Base Camp on Saturday evening. He was 86. 

According to Gyanendra Shrestha,  the liaison officer of the Tourism Ministry at the Everest Base Camp,  octogenarian Sherchan died at 5:14 pm today. He apparently died of ‘cardiac arrest’, said Shrestha.

His body will be airlifted to Kathmandu tomorrow.

Sherchan, who hails from Tatopani in Myagdi, left Kathmadu on April 16 to scale the highest summit to become the world’s oldest mountaineer. The 'Min Bahadur Everest Expedition' campaign had organized the expedition.

Sherchan had reached a top the Everest at the age of 76 in 2008 and recorded his name in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2010. Five years later, his record was broken by an 80-year-old Japanese national, Yuichiro Miura. 

Sherchan was in a bid to break the Japanese national's record and reclaim his title. 

Sherchan had made an attempt to scale Everest in 2015 but could not make it due to the Gorkha Earthquake and avalanche followed by the quake. 

Prior to his expedition, Sherchan had reaffirmed his commitment to win back the record, asserting, "I may be old in terms of age but I still have young courage. I will reach the peak of Everest, come what may."
