KATHMANDU, May 16: Orthodontists from various countries of South Asia have assembled in Kathmandu for the 2nd South Asia International Orthodontic Congress & 7th ODOAN Orthodontic Conference that kicked off here on Tuesday. 

The orthodontists from the region would be discussing the latest developments in their profession and treatment practices in the two-day meet under the theme – Orthodontic Excellence Through regional Co-operation. 

Orthodontic surgeons from 150 countries, including the SAARC member countries except Pakistan, Australia, Japan, South Korea are participating in the conference which is believed to be a platform for sharing knowledge and experience in the field. 

President of Orthodontic & Dentofacial Orthopedic Association of Nepal (ODOAN), Prof. Dr. Prakash Bhattarai said the Congress had to be postponed by two years due to the April 25, 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. 

He added that the Congress would help bring in new tools and technology of orthodontics in the country. 

Saying around 80 per cent children of Nepal have to undergo orthodontic surgery, he said that people are still not aware about its importance. 

Dr Bhattarai said, "Problem of jaw deformity is resolved through orthognathic surgery." 
Orthodontic surgeon at the Bir Hospital Dental Department, Manish Bajracharya, said that demand of orthodontics is increasing in recent period as it gives relief from different oral health problems as well as enhances personality. RSS
