KATHMANDU, May 22: Local elections this year has provided representatives to local bodies after a void of nearly two decades. Here is a glimpse into their education, qualification and pledges. 

Dolakha representatives

Road construction and drinking water will be the top priorities of my tenure. Earthquake victims are still languishing in tents, it’s high time that these families are provided proper housing support. Since people have entrusted me with valuable votes, I am obliged to work for them as expected. They have been living miserable life and I will make every effort to provide them support and compensation. Now the local bodies have adequate power to change its fate and people understand this, too. It is very important that the local bodies carry their work maintaining transparency. 

Urmila Thami (51)

We have already made a framework on how are we going to work. We have a perfect team. My team’s top priority is repairing our roads that are presently inoperable during rain. We will repair and upgrade them so that they transportation remains unobstructed throughout the year. Besides that we will be working on upgrading existing drinking water facilities so that everyone has clean drinking water as we had pledged during our election campaign. And similarly, for elderly people we are going to build old age home and temples. 

Krishna Maya Budathoki (47)

This is an opportunity as well as a big challenge for my team. We have been given enough rights and we are confident that we will change the face of our place. We have categorized most important and urgent things to do. That includes - working for drinking water facility, road facility and promoting tourism. With better road connections we hope to promote tourism which will give jobs to many people here. Providing relief to earthquake victims and supporting them in rebuilding their homes will be another major priority of our team.

Local level election in itself is a huge matter of pleasure. After almost two decades, it happened. I feel overwhelmed that I have been given the responsibility to prepare and execute overall development for this place. Good governance is the need of the time and my team is very serious about that. Blacktopping of Mude-Melung road has been long due. People have suffered a lot due to poor qualities of existing road networks. Building roads that connect every ward is one of our top priorities. There are few development related projects which we promised during the election campaign, we are going to fulfill those.

Gumansingh Aryal (57)

I am committed to developing this municipality as an example in terms of business tourism, hydropower and agricultural development. We have made a master development plan and I feel people voted for me as they trusted me. We will be making innovative intervention in developing animal husbandry, hydropower, drinking water, irrigation, education and health, among other sectors. We don’t have lack of resources, the only thing we need is to manage them through scientific approaches. Since we have a good team, clear vision and enough power in hand to do it, we expect to make a difference in short time. 

Janakraj Mishra (48) 
Mayor of Sundarbazar Municipality

Sundarbazar is going to be a model municipality. This place will be connected to all the big towns and cities of the country. Road network repair and expansion is our first priority development intervention. Apart from that we will be making intervention in developing bridges, canals, public schools, drinking water, among others. Public service will be smooth and hassle free. Since we are living in a modern and very scientific era, we will to modify ourselves to cater to the public’s anticipation. We cannot undermine the importance of cyber world.

People were hard hit in lack of local representatives. But the elections have renewed their hopes. They are now confident that hassles related to public service are over now. It feels great to have been given with such a great responsibility. We will now work together and make everything far better than before. The first step is to establish office of our ward so that we can provide effective service to the people.  Economic development is important to uplift existing poverty in the municipality. We have local resources and these will be tapped for ensuring rapid development of the municipality. We have been trusted by the people, we are not going to let them feel down.

I was worked with several public service oriented organizations earlier. But being elected as the second person in charge for developing this municipality is incredible. I am going to do everything that I would have wanted my representatives to do if I was only a voter. I am committed to do everything that will bring prosperity and happiness to the citizen of his municipality. First of our priorities is to upgrade existing road networks and extend road connectivity to every ward. Earthquake victims have high hopes on us. We will be taking immediate measures to give them respite. We will collaborate with social development organizations and cooperatives to create employment and income generation opportunities for women and youths.
