SURKHET, May 24: One policeman died and 12 others sustained injury in a jeep accident at Saunepani Mod, Birendranagar-14, Surkhet, on Tuesday. Police said 25 police personnel were on board the vehicle. The police team was returning from Kalikot after successfully completing their duty to provide security for the elections held there on Monday.

A preliminary police report said the vehicle fell 300 meters down the road as the driver lost control at the sharp bend.

Policeman Tarak Chand of Rukum died on the spot. Family members said his wife, who got married to Chand only two months ago, lost her consciousness after knowing the tragic news.

“As the driver couldn’t properly turn the jeep at the bend, the vehicle fell down the hill. We survived as we fell off the vehicle immediately after it skidded off the road. Those who were inside it were seriously injured,” said an injured Sushil Chaudhary, “The vehicle was in high speed.” Some of the injured have been airlifted to Nepalgunj for treatment in an MI-17 Helicopter of Nepal Army.
