KATHMANDU, June 2: The Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has enforced new code of ethics for medical doctors in the country.

According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), the code of ethics was recently approved by the cabinet.

Dr Dilip Sharma, registrar at the NMC, said that the code of ethics was revised as per the changing scenario and rising concerns over the responsibility of the doctors.

The newly-revised code of ethics includes universal principle of medical codes, principles of freedom and benefit for patients, non-harming principle, justice, duties of doctors toward patients, profession, staffers and their families, counseling, society, and prescription. “The code also bars medics from financially exploiting the patients while prescribing medicines,” said Sharma.

Any doctor found violating the code will be warned or suspended or barred from practice, according to the NMC.
