ITAHARI, June 19: With second round of local elections just around the corner, Nepali Congress (NC) has intensified its election campaigns in the three metropolises of Province 1.
Mayoral candidate of Biratnagar Metropolitan City (BMC) Bhim Parajuli claimed that the NC would emerge victorious and maintain its grip in the metropolis this time, too.
Talking to media persons, Parajuli said he would upgrade Biratnagar stadium into an international stadium, develop Singiya and Kesliya into a tourist hub by building dam, and develop Biratnagar into a special economic zone. He also vowed to gravel and blacktop roads, establish cooperatives in all the wards and upgrade hospitals and bring special programs for women and the elderly as political agendas. Prarajuli had started his political career from Mahendra Morang Campus as a Nepal Student Union member.
Similarly, Nepali Congress has fielded Rohit Kumar Prasain as mayoral candidate in Itahari Sub Metropolitan City. Unveiling his election manifesto, Prasain said he would take initiative to make Itahari as the capital of Province 1, build a hospital with 250 beds and make Itahari the business center of east Nepal.
Likewise, NC has fielded Tilak Rai as the mayoral candidate in Dharan Sub Metropolitan City. Talking to media persons, Rai said he would work on integrated property tax, build buspark and implement drinking water projects.
Unveiling his promises, Rai said he would develop Daran into a religious tourism region, improve facilities in BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, resolve problems related to landless squatters and bring cable-car project into operation.
However, it is early to predict which party will win elections in the upcoming local level polls. Political parties are actively holding election campaigns in these local units. It is likely that there will be a tough competition among these three political parties.
CPN (Maoist Center) and Federal Socialist Forum Nepal have formed an electoral alliance while CPN-UML has formed an alliance with Nepal Loktantrik Forum in Biratnagar. There are one metropolitan city and two sub metropolitan cities in Province 1.
