KATHMANDU, June 27: The Government of France has been launching worldwide talks on the agenda of economic development since the past few years with a view to supporting the least developed countries (LDCs) in their development endevours.

The Kathmandu series of the talk 'Thoughts to Action' that is held in world major cities ranging from Tokyo to Los Angeles every year has kicked off here.
In a panel discussion on 'development in the land-locked countries' jointly organised by the French Embassy, Alliance Francaise, Kathmandu and Nepal Economic Forum, European Union's Ambassador for Nepal Rensje Teerink said Nepal that lies in between India and China has abundant potentialities for economic development.

It was a matter of concern that Nepal still lagged behind in term of economic development despite the existence of various regional bodies such as South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multisectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), South Asian Sub Regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) and Bhutan Bangladesh, India and Nepal ( BBIN ) Initiative in the South Asia on its side.

"Integrated economic development of the entire South Asia is not so far provided that regional leaders have the political will for so," the EU Ambassador said, adding that she was hopeful that people's representatives elected through the local level election (first phase) and going to be elected in near future here would be able to translate the issues of Nepal's economic development into practice.

French Ambassador to Nepal, Mr Yves Carmona said to include Nepal in the discussion of the economic development was the special priority of the French Government and the aim of today's discussion was to support Nepal, the nature gifted country, in its efforts for development and promotion of tourism sector.

Nepal Electricity Authority managing director Kulman Ghising was of the view that the South Asia could pursue the path of development through the expansion of the trans-country transmission line and electricity supply. Maximum utilisation of water resources available in Nepal was essential to boost up its economy.RSS
