SURKHET, July 14: Newly-elected local representatives will not be able to contest for the position of District Coordination Committee if they do not furnish their election expenditure details to the district election office.

Election law has a provision to submit poll expenditures within 30 days of the poll result. Chief of the District Election Office in Surkhet, Sunita Thapa, said, "If the details of the election expenses are not provided to us then those representatives will not be able to run for the posts of District Coordination Committee chief, deputy chief and member."

Section 34 (4) of the Local Level Election Code of Conduct 2073 has a provision to submit details of poll campaign expenses within 30 days of the polls. According to Thapa, 1,220 of the total 2011 candidates have furnished the details of their expenses as of June 20.

"According to the election code of conduct, the candidates will have to pay a fine of Rs 15,000 along with the details of their expenses if they do not submit their expenditure details within 30 days," said Thapa, adding, "Since we have not received any circular from the EC, we have not penalized anyone." She also said that they will penalize both those who have submitted their expense details after 30 days and those who have not submitted it after they get the circular.

The elected representatives from major political parties have submitted their election expenses but candidates running independently or belonging to small parties are yet to submit the details, according to Thapa.
