NUWAKOT, July 17: The District Livestock Service Office (DLSO), Nuwakot, has announced that the district has become self-sufficient in meat and milk.

According to the office, it spent Rs 8.3 million for promotion and development of animal husbandry in the district in Fiscal Year 2016/17. The amount was utilized to support farmers and encourage them to expand their agro business, Khagendra Raj Bhatta, an officer at the DLSO, Nuwakot, told Republica. “We also used the budget to provide grant to quake-hit farmers and conduct awareness programs in bird-flu hit areas, among other activities,” he added.

After becoming self-sufficient in meat and dairy products, the office has said that it is now focused on making Nuwakot self-reliant in eggs. Similarly, the office has also said that it would launch campaign to raise awareness among farmers regarding the benefits of animal insurance program.

The district also exported 8 tons of forage seeds to nearby districts, according to the office.
Meanwhile, investment in agriculture sector is also increasing in the district in recent times. According to Jagadish Raj Baral, the chief district officer (CDO) of Nuwakot, the DLSO, Nuwakot, has always worked to encourage and make farmers self-dependent. “Though the office has been organizing different awareness programs, and providing grants and different services to farmers, many farmers still do have access to information related to farming. I request the office to look into this issue as well,” added Baral.

Likewise, Keshar Bahadur Pandit, local development officer (LDO) of Nuwakot, said that he was hopeful that programs brought for farmers for Fiscal Year 2017/18 will be effective. “A total of Rs 51 million has been allocated for the livestock office for the current fiscal year,” he added.

Meanwhile, farmers say that they are not benefited much by the programs brought by the office. They say that the program should focus farmers who have started animal husbandry with small investment.
