Man swindles individuals of Rs 3.1m through fake Facebook account

KATHMANDU, July 21:Police have arrested a man on the charge of defrauding several individuals by creating a fake Facebook account.

Police arrested Tul Bahadur Tamang of Mankha VDC in Sindhupalchowk district from Bhaktapur on Wednesday after he was allegedly found involved in cheating several people through Facebook by promising jobs in the USA and Canada. He has been accused of swindling a total of Rs 3.1 million from various persons.

A press statement issued by the Metropolitan Crime Division stated that the police arrested him after numerous complaints from the victims.

According to the crime division, 33-year-old Tamang created a fake Facebook account with the name of J.V, sent friend requests to several people and swindled them claiming that he was a permanent US resident and would provide them jobs in US and Canada for a fee.

He reportedly cheated Sirjana Dong, a foreign employee at Lebnan, of Rs 900,000 through Facebook by promising that he would bring her to the US on a dependent visa. Tamang had sent friend request to her through his fake Facebook account and had also met her when she had visited Nepal during vacation.    

Likewise, he later swindled Sirjana's brother Sanjay and Mim Lama of Rs 1.3 million saying that his mother was a doctor in Canada and he would take them to Canada. The crime division stated that Tamang had asked Sirjana to find other persons who would be interested to go abroad.

In yet another case of fraud, he became friends through Facebook with Kusum Lama, a Nepali working in Cyprus, through his fake Facebook account and swindled her of Rs 900,000 promising her to take to Canada on a dependent visa.

The crime division had deployed a special team to arrest Tamang.
