CHITWAN, July 21: Bharatpur Hospital has installed a biogas plant to convert wastes into energy to manage municipal wastes.    

 According to Dr Rudra Marasini, medical superintendent at Bharatpur Hospital, the plant has a capacity of 25 cubic centimeters. 

The plant has been built at a cost of Rs 490,990, out of which Rs 287,500 was received in grant.   The plant has helped the hospital to manage biowastes while also ensuring healthy environment in and around the facility. All sorts of degradable garbage and human wastes are put into the plant for generating biogas. 

The hospital has been able to minimize the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) with the installment of the plant, Marasini said.   Every day, around 45 women get admitted to the hospital for delivery. Bio-wastes such as placenta, useless human organs and fleshes from the delivery are also used for generating biogas.  The energy generated from the plant is also used to run operation theatres.  “Apart from being economical, the biogas plant has also helped us in sustainable management of wastes” Dr Marasini said. The biogas needs almost 1.5 quintal of waste to generate biogas, Coordinator of Biogas Construction Consumers Committee, Sanjeev Khanal, said. But the hospital waste is more than the required waste for the biogas plant. “So far we have faced no scarcity of raw materials to operate the biogas plant,” Marasini said.
