KATHMANDU, Aug 12: Hundreds of people marched in Kathmandu in support of Dr Govinda KC, who is on a hunger strike for the past 20 days demanding that the Medical Education Bill be passed through parliament at the earliest.

KC has also been demanding not to allow the operation of new medical colleges, slash the fees for postgraduate studies in medicine from Rs 3.1 million to 2.2 million, appoint four assistant deans and the campus chief at IOM immediately, and probe the irregularities by TU officials and take action against them.

They organized a rally starting from Maitighar to Baneshwor to express their solidarity with orthopedic surgeon Dr KC and marched along the road chanting slogans in favor of Dr KC and against the medical mafia.

Health professionals, leaders of civil society, politicians and rights activists among others called on the lawmakers to endorse the bill avoiding clauses introduced to benefit medical college operators.

Dr KC is said to be in critical condition as his hunger strike entered the 21st day on Sunday. But the government has shown indifference towards addressing his demands.
