‘New rule in Nepali swimming’

KATHMANDU, Aug 13: Nepal Swimming Association (NSA) has said that it is planning to implement a new rule from the 20th National Swimming Championship where a participant can participate in four events only. Earlier there was no such limitation.

Speaking at a press meet organized in the capital on Sunday, NSA’s vice-president and event coordinator Gita Rana informed that the new rule will be endorsed after conducting discussions with the technical team.

Rana said that such rule would help the swimmers be more focused on their specialty. “We want swimmers to do well in one special event rather than participating in many events and delivering an average performance,” Rana said.

She also said that such rule would let new swimmers to join the sport. “We want to see more new players participating in the championship so this new rule would help us to meet our target,” Rana said: “If the players are allowed to take part only in limited events, there will be opportunity for new participants who would be motivated to take part in the championship.”

The championship with the help of National Sports Council (NSC) will be held at Satdobato Swimming Complex in Lagankhel from August 17 to 18. The championship will feature a total of 136 players from the erstwhile five development regions of Nepal and three departmental teams including Tribhuvan Army Club, Nepal Police Club, and Armed Police Force.

The championship will see the swimmers participating in the 21 events of both men’s and women’s sections. On the same occasion, Rana also said that the NSA was organizing the championship earlier than the schedule since the players will have to leave for training abroad. “We are hosting this competition sooner than the schedule we had previously made as the players will have to leave for the training,” she said.

NSA’s general secretary Jagat Man Shrestha said that the new rule was not made keeping one particular player in the mind. Echoing Rana’s thoughts, Shrestha said that he expected the new rule to help the swimmers give better performance as they would take part in fewer events.
