NAWALPARASI, August 14: Floods have killed at least a one-horned rhino and six deer in Nawalparasi district. Police on Sunday evening found the carcasses of one rhino and six deer on the bank of the Narayani River. According to DSP Bishnu Hari Koirala all the carcasses were recovered from the same area. “They were killed by the flood and brought here. We recovered the carcasses of six deer and one rhino,” he said. 

The carcasses were handed over to the District Forest Office, according to Koirala. He further stated that even other animals like jackals and beers have also been killed in the flood though details on them is yet to be collected. “The swollen river has affected humans and animals alike. Both large and small animals have been greatly affected,” he said. 

The swollen Narayani River has completely inundated Sauraha.   

Villages inundated 

Heavy rainfall for the past few days has left several villages submerged in the southern part of Nawalparasi district. Chhetrapratap Rural Municipality has been greatly affected. 
According to locals, there has been no human loss so far though many have been injured in the floods. Dozens of families have been forced to flee their homes. For instance, all the five family members of Arjun Harichan, a local of Chhetrapratap Rural Municipality-3, have sustained injuries. The injured have been admitted to Sahid Smriti Hospotal, Chaupata. 

According to Anoj Yadav, district member of Nepal Student Union, people are suffering in the lack of food and shelter. Since people's belongings were washed away by the flood, they are going to suffer for long, if relief is not distributed. “The flood has devastated people's lives. They have lost everything,” he said. “Many got injured while trying to flee to safer areas. Water level has receded, but not that significantly,” he added. 

Many flood victims have already lost their houses, he claimed. “People's houses have been damaged. Some were fully washed away. Cloths, food, important papers or documents nothing left,” he lamented.
 

Yadav reported that the flood has fully disrupted vehicular movement in Nawalparasi. Similarly, communication and electricity service has also been badly affected. “Schools, colleges are shut. Market areas are equally disturbed. Life is out of track,” he noted.
