KATHMANDU, August 20: UML Vice Chairman Bam Dev Gautam has said that the main opposition UML would take an appropriate decision regarding the constitutional amendment after receiving a formal request from the ruling parties.

He said that the UML was yet to receive formal request on the constitution amendment from the government.

The constitution amendment bill, languishing in the parliament since April, is set to be put to vote later this week.

“We have not received any formal request from the government to support the amendment bill. There has not been any change in the position of our party regarding the amendment. But a formal decision would be taken after getting an official request from the governing parties,” said Gautam. The UML has so far refused to support the bill raising questions on its need.

Gautam’s remarks have come at a time when top leaders of the governing coalition are telling that the bill would be endorsed by the parliament with the backing of UML.

Last week, UML spokesperson Yogesh Bhattarai had said that the main opposition will not support the constitutional amendment bill.
