Silence period begins Friday midnight

KATHMANDU, Sept 15: The Election Commission (EC) is enforcing 'silence period' from Friday mid-night for the Province 2 local elections scheduled for September 18.  

Issuing a press statement, EC on Thursday urged the political parties, their candidates, office bearers, civil society organizations and voters not to carry out any kind of publicity campaign until the voting concludes.
 
The parties should stay away from holding election campaigns and stop using SMS, and social media to canvass votes. The rules to be complied with by the political parties and candidates during the 'silence period' are as follows:

Prior to the 'silence period' parties have to remove their respective election symbols, publicity materials including posters and banners put up in the periphery of 300 meters of the polling centers.
The parties should stay away from holding election campaigns and stop using SMS and social media to canvass votes.

The use of stickers, caps, logos, bags, scarfs tattoo etc., symbolizing particular candidates or political parties are prohibited. Also, media should refrain from disseminating news for the publicity of candidates and political parties.

After successful first and second rounds of elections, the EC is holding final round of the local elections in 136 local units of Province 2 on September 18. Altogether 6, 627 representatives will be elected through this election.
