BIRGUNJ, July 27: Import of major commodities through Birgunj customs fell drastically in Fiscal Year 2015/16.

Because of Tarai unrest and Indian blockade, import of major commodities like fuel, automobiles, iron, and crude came down from this major trading point, according to Birgunj Custom Office.

Officials of Birgunj Customs Office said imports from the major trading point fell in the review year as traders shifted to other routes following continuous disturbance in the Birgunj route.

Birgunj Customs Office mobilized Rs 55.6 billion in revenue after the blockade was lifted, down from the revised target of Rs 71.86 billion.

Statistics of Birgunj Customs Office shows that only 5,171 vehicles under car, jeep, van segment entered Nepal through the customs point in 2015/16 down from 11,698 units in 2014/15.  Likewise, only 70,518 two-wheelers were imported through the point in 2015/16 against 109,435 units in 2014/15.

Likewise, import of vehicles chassis also declined in the review year. Only 4,184 chassis of buses and trucks entered the country through Birgunj customs in 2015/16, down from 4,776 in 2014/15.

Import of petroleum products through the customs point also fell in the review year. According to the office, 344,367 kiloliters of diesel and 119,135 kiloliters of petrol entered the country from the customs point in 2015/16 down from 497,885 kiloliters and 182,357 kiloliters, respectively, in 2014/15.

Statistics shows import of every product from the customs point fell in the review year.

Lok Raj Panta, information officer of Birgunj Customs Office, said that import through Birgunj customs, however, is growing with each passing day.
