Sompal, Bowlers secure thumping first win

KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Sompal Kami’s 66 runs with the bat and two early strikes with the ball scripted the first victory by 153 runs for Nepal in the first match of the practice tour in India held at SRM University Ground, Chennai.

Kami made early inroads in his second over of the match where he picked up two top-order wickets of Dindigul Dragons. Lalit Singh Bhandari, the debutant pace bowler for Nepal, chipped in with the first wicket to leave Dragons reeling on six runs for three wickets in the third over. The Tamil Nadu Premier League outfit never recovered from the match and stumbled to 63 all out in the 36th over. Off-spinner Sagar Pun rounded up the match by dismissing last three batsmen supported by Sushil Kandel and Sandeep Lamichhane’s one and two wickets respectively. Basant Regmi was wicketless in his five overs spell. Host team’s Mohammad Aasif Ya (24) and Rathnam AVR were only batsmen to register double-digit scores.

Earlier, Nepal won the toss and elected to bat first. Nepal was reduced to 85 runs for six wickets in 25th over. S Arvind tormented Nepali batsmen picking up 4 wickets including Sharad Vesawkar for one run and skipper Paras Khadka for a golden duck. Sompal Kami (66) and Basant Regmi (56) shared a partnership of 107 runs from there on to bail Nepal out of trouble. Sompal innings included two boundaries and four sixes supported by Regmi playing sheet anchor’s role with one boundary and a couple of sixes. Nepal finished with 216 runs in their 50 overs for the loss of eight wickets.

Nepal team is currently at Chennai, India scheduled to play four practice matches against local cricket teams.
