Nepal earns first win in Bhutan

KATHMANDU, Sept 22:   Nepal registered a 2-0 win over the Maldives in the ongoing SAFF U-18 Championship on Friday. 

Roman Limbu and Rejin Subba scored a goal each to help Nepal register its first win in the championship at Changlimithang stadium, Thimpu. 

Nepal had suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of host Bhutan in its first match on Tuesday. 
Defender Limbu put the Nepali young team in the driving seat scoring the opening goal in the 7th minute.

Limbu’s long range effort was turned into a goal after Maldivian defenders and goalkeeper couldn’t communicate properly to prevent the shot. Nepal extended its lead in the 57th minute with Rejin Subba’s header goal. Subba utilized Abhishek Rijal’s cross coming from the right wing to give a 2-0 lead to the Nepali young team. 

Nepal missed an opportunity to make it 3-0 when Abhishek Rijal failed to utilize a penalty. 
Nepal’s Head Coach Tshering Lopsang rued over missing many goal scoring opportunities. “We wanted to score more goals but we missed a number of opportunities.  We have to work on finishing in the upcoming matches,” said Lopsang. 

With a win over the Maldives, defending champion Nepal has rejuvenated its hope to regain the title of the championship. 

Likewise, the Maldives are out of the championship with three straight losing streaks and they will face India in their last match.

Nepal will now face the Bangladeshi side which is at the top of the scorecard with six points from two matches. 

A total of five South Asian nations including Bhutan, Bangladesh, the Maldives, India and Nepal are competing in the championship which is being held under the round-robin system. The team with the highest points will win the 
championship.
