MAHOTTARI, Sept 23: Hari Prasad Mandal, a popular young journalist of Mahottari was sworn in as the new chief of Matihani Municipality after garnering maximum votes in the third round of recently held local elections.

Though he doesn't have a long political history, Mandal was chosen by the people for the chief post because of his genuine promises and leadership quality. Mandal who got elected from Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) received a total of 3,404 votes against his closest rival Mujibul Rahman of CPN-UML who got 1,597 votes.

Mandal has a great reputation among the locals. He used to show his concern for the development of the municipality in his write-ups. He addressed the public grievances and problems in his writing and tried to solve them with the help of the authorities. When all other candidates spent millions in a bid to attract the voters, he claims that he didn't have to spend a single penny to convince his voters. "I believe we should get votes by winning hearts not by buying the voters," he said. He has been an active journalist since 2002.

Despite knowing that there will be a lot of challenges and obstacles in his way, he is determined to change the development scenario of his Municipality. There are nine wards in Matihani and a altogether 258,300 voters.
