ITAHARI, July 28: Around 1,500 people of 285 families have been displaced in Sunsari district after incessant rainfall for the past five days caused widespread flooding and inundation. The families were forced to leave after water entered into their homes, destroying some of them.

According to local authorities, two houses in Ithari, 15 in Dharan, 17 in Duhabi, 46 in Chittaha, 3 in Amadubba, 17 in Amahibela, 5 in Rajgunj, 1 in Basantapur and 9 in Bhutaha of Ramnagar were flooded, displacing dozens of families. Though the rain has caused loss of property and displaced families, no human casualty has been reported so far.

Chief District Officer Mohan Bahadur Chapagain said that around 30 houses have been completely damaged by the torrential rain for the last five days. According to him, all the displaced families have been currently taking shelter at different places including a public school, health posts and other safe areas.

He said that the District Administration Office has supplied necessary relief materials to the displaced families.  

As many as 42 houses in Musahar tole in Sunsari were inundated. Among them, a dozen of houses have been completely damaged. Chapagain said that the locals of Chittaha, Amahibela, Bhutaha, Madhyaharsahi and Sitagunj have been severely affected by the rainfall as majority of the houses in the areas were muddy huts.

The District Administration Office has distributed relief materials to as many as 208 families - 122 families in Amadubba, 21 in Amahibela and 65 in Narsingha.

CDO Chapagin said that the security agencies have been kept on high alert for rescue in case of further damages in the district. He said that the displaced families have been supplied with food and tents as temporary shelter.
