BANKE, JULY 28: Nepal Army (NA) on Wednesday rescued additional 225 locals from Holiya and Gangapur of Banke who were stuck in the floods of Rapti River. Out of them, 104 were rescued by an NA chopper with an initiation of District Disaster Relief Committee, Banke.

The NA personnel had evacuated 673 locals on Tuesday who were evacuated  using  helicopters and boats after a swollen Rapti River entered their settlements.

Chief District Officer Ravi Lal Pant said that the locals have been taken to safer places.  Locals who were stranded in an island created by the river have also been rescued, according to him.

Holiya, Fattepur, Gangapur, Matehiya, Betahani, Khaskusma, Kachanapur, Baijapur and Binauna among other VDCs have been inundated by Rapti River following incessant rainfall since the last couple of days.

According to the Kusum-based Flood Recording Center, the water level in the river at 11 pm on Tuesday was 8.15 meters. Flood Reader Bhadra Bahadur Thapa said that the water level in the river is receding gradually.

The water gushes into Holiya, Fattepur and Gangapur among other VDCs after the water level crosses 4.70 meters in Kusum.  

CDO Panta said that the early warning system and prompt rescue prevented human casualty.
