KATHMANDU, Oct 6: The board of directors of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has decided to sack foreign pilot Gabriele Ascenzo-Gabe concluding that his service is no longer needed in the corporation.

The board directed the NAC management to sack the 66-year-old Canadian pilot, who was paid Rs 2.65 million a month and was given the post equivalent to deputy managing director.

“The board of directors has decided to sack Pilot Gabe, who has been working at the NAC for the last nine months,” said a highly-placed source. “Board members were unhappy with the appointment of Gabe right since the beginning and this time the efforts to sack him became successful.”

NAC Managing Director Sugat Ratna Kansakar on January 18, 2017 had hired him for two years with a monthly salary of Rs 2.65 million saying that “the specialized service” he can provide was “essential for the NAC.” Board members however termed it unnecessary and said the decision was against NAC regulations.

“At the board meeting, Kansakar however couldn’t justify the rationale for hiring Gabe,” said the source. “Gabe’s appointment has only incurred financial losses to the NAC.”
