ITAHARI, Oct 17:  The devastating floods which struck the country two months ago rendered hundreds of families homeless. In the wake of the flood-wreaked havoc, Itahari Sub-Metropolitan city has decided to manage immediate shelter for 35 displaced families of Itahari ward no-3. Besides this, the sub-metropolis has also announced to provide shelter to around 100 families of three more wards in a matter of days.

 Since the floods of August, these 35 families of ward no-3, Sunaulo Tole have been forced to live in tents alongside the road. 

The authorities are planning to resettle the flood victims in around 1 bigha land which have been unregistered in the ward. 

Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City's mayor Dwarika Lal Chaudhary informed that the flood victims will be provided with the new houses very soon. “We have found a large piece of land which has been illegally owned by some locals. So we decided to settle the flood victims in that land,” he said.

He further informed that if they find out more illegal lands, they would provide shelter even to the victims of other wards there. The sub-metropolis will also provide construction materials worth Rs 25,000 to the victims. 

As many as 107 households of upper and lower villages of Sunaulo Tole were driven out of their homes due to the floods. Among them, 35 families are living in streets under tents while others are living in rented rooms. Only a few of them could get back to what was left of their homes.

The flood victims were living a miserable life in roads and the sub-metropolis has expressed its concerns. “Day by day, health of those people has been deteriorating and we thought it is very much important to relocate and rehabilitate them as soon as possible,” said Bal Krishna Bista, chairperson of ward no 3. 

A month ago, Dhanmaya Khati, 70, lost her life being unable to bear the miserable life in tent after being forced out of her home.  According to Mayor Chaudhary, there are many more homeless people in ward no 4, 9 and 10 as well. 

“Equal numbers of people are living in tents in other wards too and we must find shelter for them too,” he said.
