KATHMANDU, Oct 22: The registration of nomination of aspiring candidates for the first phase of elections for federal parliament and provincial assemblies has begun from 10 am on Sunday.

Those would-be candidates have to get their nomination papers registered at the office of the Chief Returning Officer and the Returning Officer opened in the district headquarters till 5 pm.

The nominations will take place in 37 constituencies for the members of the House of Representatives and in 74 constituencies for the members of the Provincial Assemblies in the first phase according to Navaraj Dhakal, spokesperson of Election Commission.

Candidates aspiring to contest provincial and federal parliamentary elections under the first-past-the-post category in 32 districts of mountainous and highly hilly regions are filing their nominations.

The first phase of the election is being held in Solukhumbu, Sankhuwasabha, Bhojpur, Okhaldhunga, Taplejung, Panchthar, Khotang, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Dhading, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Mustang, Myagdi, Baglung, Manang, Lamjung, Gorkha, East Rukum, Rolpa, West Rukum, Jajarkot, Humla, Mugu, Jumla, Kalikot, Dolpa, Darchula, Bajhang, Bajura and Baitadi districts on November 26.

As per the legal provision, a person filing nomination papers under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) category of the House of Representatives and Provincial assemblies should produce papers with the signatures of two persons indicating that those proposers and seconder of the nominee should have their names in the voters list for the ward member of the Rural Municipality or Municipality of the same election constituency, the receipt of payment of deposit and in the case of a candidate from a political party, the person should also include the official letter from the party in the nomination papers.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission says the leaders whose names have been included in the closed list of proportional representation elections are not eligible to file nominations for FPTP polls.

Three million 228 thousand and 879 voters are using their franchise in the first phase of elections to Federal Parliament and Provincial Assemblies.

The Election Commission has stated that the voters roll for the first phase elections has already been printed and sent to the districts concerned.

There are 4,465 polling booths and 2,946 voting centers in the first phase elections.
