President Bhandari leaves for UAE

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has left here for Abu Dhabi for an official visit to the United Arab Emirates this afternoon at the cordial invitation of UAE's Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and UAE's Armed Forces' deputy supreme commander, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and high-level officials were at VVIP longue of at Tribhuvan International Airport to see off President Bhandari.

Gachchhadar sees no force to overcome NC in upcoming elections

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar has claimed that there was no other political party capable of defeating the Nepali Congress in the upcoming elections as the party had already won the people's hearts by its works and activities.  "The entire Nepali people are all aware of the contribution of party to the country's political history and development endeavours and its victory in the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives and State Assemblies is certain," he said following the inauguration of the Nepali Congress media centre established in Itahari in view of the elections today. 

Arun III, Upper Karnali get financial closure deadline extension

A meeting of Investment Board Nepal (IBN) has extended the deadline of Arun-III Hydropower Project and Upper Karnali Hydropower Project for financial closure. The 28th meeting of the IBN chaired by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has extended the term of Arun-III hydro power project for six months starting September 30, 2017 to complete financial closure.

U. S.-funded survey shows improved women’s and children’s health over 20 years

The Ministry of Health released the U.S. Embassy-funded 2016 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey report, which highlighted Nepal’s progress over the last 20 years in improving maternal and child health. Issuing a press release on Monday, the embassy has stated that in last 20 years the health condition of the mothers and the children have gradually improved in Nepal.

Afghan official: Taliban kill 8 policemen in country's west

An Afghan official says a Taliban attack in western Farah province has killed eight police officers. Mohammad Naser Mehri, spokesman for the provincial governor, says the Taliban attacked a police check point near the city of Farah, the provincial capital, early on Monday morning. Mehri says the attack only lasted 10 to 15 minutes and when reinforcement arrived, they found the bodies at the checkpoint. He added that one policeman was slightly wounded in the attack and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of links with the insurgents.

Kenyan runner wins Mount Everest Prize in Kanchenjunga Marathon

Kenyan runner Philip Yiego has won the Mount Everest Marathon Goodwill Prize in the Kanchenjunga Marathon held in Sikkim, India, last week. Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon – the organizers of the Everest Marathon held annually in the Khumbu region on May 29 – had sponsored the award. The award carries a purse of Rs 8,848, symbolizing the height of Mt Everest. “This marks the beginning of a new era of goodwill between people of Nepal and Sikkim, strengthening the connectivity between the highest and third highest mountain in the world i.e. Mt Everest and Mt Kanchenjunga,” Bikram Pandey KAJI, who created the world’s highest trail running event – Mount Everest Marathon  -- said.
