Sabnam Rai hat-trick propels Nepal to second win, missed qualification

KATHMANDU, Nov 24: Player of the match Sabnam Rai dismissed Zhang Chan in the last ball of the second over and came back to pick two wickets in first two deliveries of fourth over to complete a hat-trick and set the match for Nepal women in the fifth and final match of the Asia Region qualifiers. Skipper Rubina Chettri also picked up three wickets to bundle out China to give Nepal a victory by 50 runs in the final league match of the ICC Women’s World T20 Asia Region Qualifies at Bangkok.

However, Nepal has failed to qualify for global qualifiers with second wins taking the tally to six points after five matches. UAE and Hong Kong sitting at top and second position have eight and seven points respectively. UAE has qualified for the global qualifiers whereas the match between Thailand and Hong Kong will decide the second qualifying team.

China lost all their matches in the group as they were all out of paltry 52 runs in 19th overs chasing the target of 102. Nepal, who faced a 5-run defeat against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and had only two points that came after rain washed their clashes with Hong Kong and Thailand.

Earlier, Nepal was invited to bat first after losing the toss and made a total of 102-8 in 20 overs. Zhang Xiangxue of China picked up three wickets.

Rubina top-scored for Nepal with 18 off 14 balls which included two boundaries while opener Kajol Shrestha made 16 runs off 26 balls. The most runs came from extras conceding 19 runs by China bowlers.
