Mobile phone imports via Birgunj jumps five times

BIRGUNJ, Dec 12: Import of mobile phones has jumped by more than five times via the Birgunj customs point. According to statistics of Birgunj Customs Office, 147,005 cell phones entered the country in the first four months of this fiscal year, while only 27,768 mobile phones were imported in that period last year. 

Likewise, the import of several other electronic appliances have soared significantly with Rs 858.3 million worth of more electronics entering the country from Birgunj alone than in the previous year.

The import of air conditioners increased by 38.76 percent with a total of 7,898 units entering the country through Birgunj in contrast to 5,692 units last year. Last year, 40,119 fans were imported from the transit while this number increased by 47 percent to 58,833 units.

The import of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) also increased by 19.27 percent as Nepal imported 1.76 million units of this device this year which was limited to 900,333 units during this period in the last fiscal year. Similarly, the import of heaters rose by a staggering 171 percent towering to 62,561 this year from 23,006 of last year. 

This year saw twice the import of telephones with 11,013 of last year swelling to 22,539 this year. Similarly, there has been a steep rise in the import of coffee makers as 9,205 units were imported as opposed to 555 last year. 

Among the towering import of electronics items, import of printers from Birgunj has declined this year to 4,231 from the last year's 7,538 units.
