JANAKPUR, Dec27: The locals of Churefed in Dhanusha have discovered a new source of income from the sale of handicrafts made of bamboo. The Local Development Trust trained as many as 157 people from eight local communities for the same.

Locals of Mithila Municipality, Ganeshman Charnath Municipality, Dhanushadham Municipality, Janakpur Sub-metropolitan City and Hanhaspur Municipality received the training. They are currently producing handicraft items such as dhakki (basket), naglo (a flat round tray made of bamboo), mudha (stool), photo frame, bangles stand, bookrack and pen holders, among others.

President of Everest Bamboo Chair Production Community at Mithila Municipality, Shanti Lama said, “The production and sale of handicrafts has become a great source of income for the locals.” Basanta Mandal, co-coordinator of the Local Development Trust, said, “People who are living below the poverty line were selected for the training.
