Candidates hesitant to reveal election expenses

TAPLEJUNG, Jan 3: Even weeks after the successful conclusion of the recent provincial and parliamentary elections, candidates from Taplejung district are yet to submit the reports of their election-related expenditures to the Election Commission (EC).

Of the total 23 candidates under first-past-the-post (FPTP) category who contested the elections from Taplejung, only seven have submitted their expenditure reports so far.

There is a provision which requires the candidates to make public their election expenditures public within 35 days from the day of the final election result is announced. The 35th day of the publication of final election results is on January 13. 

So far, those who submitted their election expenditure details include one candidate of CPN (Maoist Center), three candidates of Sanghiya Loktantrik Rastriya Manch / Sanghiya Limbuwan Manch and three candidates of Rastriya Janamukti Party. 

According to District Election Officer Mahesh Kumar Thakur, two candidates of parliamentary elections and five candidates of provincial elections have submitted their expenditure details so far. The district had eight candidates for parliamentary elections, seven candidates in provincial elections of constituency 1 (a) and eight candidates in provincial elections of constituency 1 (b), taking the total number of candidates to 23.

From the parliamentary elections, only Bishnu Kumar Yeksho Limbu of Sanghiya Loktantrik Rastriya Manch / Sanghiya Limbuwan Manch and Rastriya Janamukti Party candidate Aaitaraj Mabo have submitted their election expense details, according to the District Election Office. Limbu's expense report shows that he spent Rs 613,000 for the election while Mabo's report states his expenditure to be Rs 440,000.
